Public buiding. Salburua, Vitoria. SPAIN. Contest 2001
AWARDS. Honor mention
The interpretation centre of Salburúa is protected and shaded by a huge metal bird that acts as the main roof of
the building. Under its zinc wings it is both transparent and opaque, protected from the sun, bright and luminous,
becomes a part of the landscape and incorporates the play on solids and voids of its surroundings.
Essentially, it’s breaking the main idea of the building. It has no architectural reference to tie itself to, not
even the European UFO that sits beside it. Due to this, the building is dematerialized, timid, all spatial parameters
having been forgotten and shinning the spotlight over the winged bird cover only.
